WHY AN OFFSHORE BREEDING CAGE?
In Italy, as in many countries, the development of cage mariculture is linked
to the possibility of moving aquaculture activity from sheltered sites to exposed areas or even to the open sea (OFFSHORE BREEDING). This need is also due to:
- Lack of adequate space.
- Pollution.
- Environmental impact.
The development of mariculture will therefore always be linked to the use of reliable and appropriate structures for the activity in the open sea.
HOW DOES THE OFFSHORE CAGE WORK?
The technology used for the realization of the offshore cages makes the best use of the typical characteristics of a traditional floating cage (ease of access and management during the rearing cycle) with the safety in terms of resistance to swell, obtained with a fully submerged cage. The result is therefore a cage capable of operating on the surface or in depth according to the requirements of the breeder.
The structure was deliberately designed without any supports or metal parts in order to eliminate the problems of corrosion and stress with the plastic structure of the cage.
The cage is submerged by opening the air or water valves. The water pressure evacuates the air contained in the HDPE pipes.
To perform the emersion of the structure, simply do the opposite operation. The emission of air into the tubes through the valves evacuates the water contained in the HDPE tubes.
Pressurized air can be supplied by scuba tanks or using a low pressure compressor of 300 liters / min. minimum effective output, and a tank of about 100 liters.
It is important to note that the surface cage has exactly the same characteristics of a traditional floating cage.
The immersion and emersion operations can be carried out in about 10 minutes, but in order to avoid stress on the farmed fish, it is strongly recommended to raise the cage gradually over 20-30 minutes. The exact emersion times will be determined according to the characteristics of the site and the type of farmed fish.
HOW IS THE OFFSHORE CAGE MADE?
The offshore cage is made with the following material:
The main support structure for the breeding nets is made up of a circular buoyancy ring in TECHNOCAGE GS plastic material, of variable circumference and made up of n ° 2 HDPE (high density polyethylene) tubes available in different diameters (see section technical data sheet) without the traditional expanded polystyrene filling typical of floating cages, but provided with an additional pneumatic system.
The brackets are reinforced to face marine weather conditions in the open sea. The stanchions also support an HDPE tube railing.
The breeding nets, installed below the supporting structure in HDPE, are made of high tenacity nylon thread. The net which represents the vital enclosure of farmed fish is one of the most important components of the offshore cage. The dimensions of the mesh vary in size depending on the size of the fish during the rearing cycle.
All ordinary and extraordinary livestock management operations such as fishing, sampling and other operations that require fish harvesting are carried out directly on the surface and this thanks to the ease of use of the TECHNOCAGE offshore cage. . This is why the net is fitted on the upper part of the cage with a removable “roof”. The “roof” is sewn onto the net and its opening is guaranteed and simplified by a marine plastic zipper (resistance of 2000 kg. Per linear meter).
It is possible to add a ballast ring outside the perimeter of the bottom of the net in order to effectively tension the net, especially where sea currents are strong.
